Wallpapering around a window or door reveal

One of the things that puts people off from wallpapering is they are unsure how to tackle certain area’s. One of these is a window or door reveal.

It isn’t as daunting as it may first appear and I will try to explain how to do it below.

Where and how to start with the wallpaper

One of the first things I do, is measure using a roll of wallpaper to work out where the sheet will come at the reveal, in other words I see if the paper goes around the reveal and not stop on the external corner, this is bad! You may have to adjust where you start hanging the wallpaper or even start from another starting point, such as the other corner of the wall.

Once you have worked this out and made a plumb line on the wall you can start to hang the wallpaper. Hang the first sheet making sure you follow the plumb line to ensure it is straight and upright.

Now take the next sheet and match the pattern, if the wallpaper has one, and hang that sheet, then keep going until you reach the reveal.

Adrian’s Horror Story

Extra Extra Read All About It

Adrian’s horror story has been published in the ICI Dulux Trade’s newsletter (issue 10 Winter 2010), TradeXpress.

TradeXpress is the trade newsletter for professional decorators with the latest news from the trade, reviews of latest products and a round up of what is going on within the trade, as well as features and stories from decorators.

I received the TradeXpress newsletter and read it with interest, I twitter as @propertydecor and follow @DuluxTrade which is how this came about, @DuluxTrade asked if I had any horror stories I could submit. I submitted my horror story about a job I did some years ago now, I hadn’t come across it before and haven’t seen anything like it since……..

To find out what I’m on about you can see my story on the TradeXpress website.

VAT Increase January 2011

VAT

VAT Increase coming in January 2011

How does it effect you?

With the new increase of the current VAT rate from 17.5% to 20% in January 2011 I was wondering how this will effect painters and decorators like myself. I was wondering if the increase would put people off having any decorating done because they think the increase will make the decorating job cost too much.

I hope people don’t think like this and actually think about what little difference it will make, especially by using a local independent tradesman who isn’t VAT registered. If a job costs £500 including the materials now (£400 labour and £100 materials) the same job in the new year will only cost an extra £2.50 as the materials are the only thing effected by the VAT. So, instead of paying £500 now you would pay £502.50 in January.

Still think the VAT increase will make that decorating job cost too much?

If your based in the Southend on Sea area and would like an estimate for some decorating in the New Year why not contact us or fill in our decorating estimate form to arrange an onsite visit.
